As this year draws to a close, our latest Environmental Sustainability Affinity Group meeting turned its focus to something close to our hearts: celebrating the holidays with joy while honoring our responsibility to the planet.
We shared practical ideas, thoughtful comparisons, and inspiring calls to action, reminding ourselves that sustainability isn’t just a corporate goal, but a personal choice we can all make. We hope that your holidays are filled with joy across all cultures and traditions and that the following ideas inspire choices that feel meaningful to you in the midst of your celebrations.
Gift Wrapping & Décor
When wrapping gifts and decorating, the most sustainable choice is often the simplest: using what you already have. From fabric wraps and recycled paper to decorations made from pinecones and branches, creativity and reuse can transform holiday traditions. Decorating with family heirlooms instead of single-use items creates lasting memories and reduces waste.
Real vs. Artificial Trees
If you celebrate with a Christmas tree, you may wonder whether real or artificial trees are more environmentally friendly. Real trees capture carbon and biodegrade naturally but require annual cutting and careful disposal. Artificial trees have a heavier carbon footprint but can be the better choice if reused for more than 10 years. Whichever you choose, opt for locally sourced and sustainably produced trees, and dispose responsibly.
Conscious Holiday Shopping
With holiday sales everywhere, shopping consciously is on our minds. Make lists, avoid impulse buys, and prioritize quality over quantity. Support local businesses, sustainable brands, and secondhand shops. Platforms like Commons and 1% for the Planet help identify ethical companies. Consider gifts with purpose—whether handmade items, experiences, or purchases from or donations to causes like World Wildlife Fund (WWF), The Ocean Cleanup, or Club Ocean.
Reduce Food Waste
Food is central to holiday gatherings, yet global food waste spikes during this season. Plan meals carefully, shop locally and seasonally, and incorporate more plant-based dishes.
Reducing food waste and using reusable serving options makes celebrations both delicious and eco-friendly.
Give Back to Communities
The holidays are a time to give generously beyond our homes. Sorting old toys and clothes for donations, volunteering at local organizations, or supporting community initiatives are meaningful ways to give back. Sustainability is not only about reducing harm, but also about increasing positive impact.
Looking Ahead
As we look ahead to 2026, let’s ask ourselves: How will we live more sustainably in the new year? Whether through small daily choices or bold commitments, the message is clear: our planet, our responsibility.
Sustainability is not just a corporate goal. It’s a personal value that leaves our communities and our planet better this holiday season.
We wish you a joyful and sustainable holiday season!
