What is the “Culture Map” and Why Does it Matter?

We are a growing global company made up of many diverse cultures.

As we continue to grow and form more cross-functional, cross-region teams, understanding cultural differences is critical.

Too often, we assume that everyone communicates and works the same way. They don’t. Every culture has its own norms for communication, decision-making, and collaboration.

What is the Culture Map?

The Culture Map, created by Erin Meyer, is a framework that helps us understand how cultural differences impact our global business. It looks at eight dimensions where cultures vary, including:

  • Direct vs. Indirect Communication – Do people say exactly what they mean or rely on subtle cues?
  • Hierarchical vs. Egalitarian Leadership – Is decision-making top-down or collaborative?
  • Task-based vs. Relationship-based Trust – Is trust built through performance or personal connection?

These differences (and so many more) influence how we interact with customers, integrate new teams, and collaborate across regions and borders.

Why Does This Matter?

When we understand cultural differences, we don’t just avoid misunderstandings; we unlock truly effective collaboration. It helps us communicate more effectively, make smarter decisions, and build stronger relationships both internally and with global customers.

As we continue to grow, expand into new regions, and work across diverse teams, success depends on more than technical expertise; it depends on our ability to understand and operate effectively with our differences. That’s how we innovate, serve customers better, and win together.
