Most encoders use optical techniques, where the rotor is an optical disk which co-operates with an optoelectric transceiver located on the stator. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celeramotion.com\/optical-sensors\/what-is-an-optical-encoder\/\">Optical encoder<\/a> technology relies on the accurate and tightly controlled rotation of a rotor relative to a stator. Bearings are typically used to keep rotor and stator concentric. The introduction of mechanical moving parts has a number of disadvantages, especially in harsh operating environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-alternative-bearingless-encoders\">The Alternative \u2013 Bearingless Encoders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Zettlex IncOder inductive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celeramotion.com\/inductive-sensors\/products\/incoder-inductive-encoders\/\">angle encoders<\/a> can be considered as \u2018bearingless encoders\u2019. In these devices, the rotor is completely free to move relative to the stator \u2013 if bearings are involved they are typically already present in the host system.
