Organizations often focus on strategy, technology and execution when pursuing growth.

But behind every successful strategy is something less visible: a team that trusts one another enough to challenge ideas and solve problems together, moving forward with confidence.

That lesson has become increasingly clear through the Advanced Surgery Leadership Team’s ongoing Cohesive Teams journey.

Over the past several years, team members have participated in facilitated sessions designed to strengthen trust and improve communication, creating greater alignment. What started as a leadership development exercise evolved into a practical framework for how the team collaborates every day.

The experience helped employees better understand how teammates think, communicate and make decisions. Through assessments, team discussions and structured exercises, participants gained insight into individual strengths as well as personality styles and motivations.

The result was not greater agreement. It was greater understanding.

When people understand where different perspectives come from, disagreement becomes more productive. Teams become more comfortable discussing difficult topics and challenging assumptions, working through conflict constructively.

That shift has had a measurable impact on collaboration within the team.

Meeting structures became more intentional. Communication improved. Decision-making accelerated because employees developed greater trust in one another’s intentions and expertise.

For global teams, these benefits become even more important.

When employees work across different sites, countries and functions, relationship-building cannot be left to chance. Regular check-ins and opportunities for personal connection help create the trust needed to collaborate effectively.

The team’s experience reinforces a broader principle relevant to organizations of all sizes: Trust is not a soft skill. It is a business capability.

Trust enables faster decisions. It improves collaboration. It creates space for healthy conflict and stronger innovation. It helps teams remain resilient through change.

As organizations grow and become more interconnected, investing in team cohesion becomes increasingly important.

The strongest teams are not the ones that avoid disagreement. They are the ones that build enough trust to navigate disagreement well.

For the Advanced Surgery Leadership Team, that investment continues today. Their experience demonstrates that cohesive leadership is not a destination. It is an ongoing practice that helps teams perform at their best while creating stronger outcomes for the business.

As we continue growing as One Novanta, those lessons become increasingly valuable.
