I recently spent two days at the Table Group CEO Summit in Nashville, Tennessee, joining leaders from a wide range of industries to discuss leadership, organizational health, talent, and growth. The summit is designed for CEOs and senior executives who play a significant role in shaping organizational culture, leadership effectiveness, and long-term business performance. Participants represented a variety of leadership positions across their organizations, creating opportunities to learn from peers facing similar challenges in building healthy, high-performing teams.

Like many leadership events, there was plenty of conversation about strategy, execution, and business performance. As the discussions unfolded, I noticed a common theme emerging across nearly every session.

The organizations achieving the strongest results weren’t distinguished by their processes, resources, or tools. They were distinguished by their teams.

That observation stuck with me because it’s easy to assume that competitive advantage comes from having the best technology, the most sophisticated systems, or access to unique resources. Those things certainly matter, but in today’s environment, most successful organizations have talented people, strong capabilities, and proven processes.

What truly separates organizations is how effectively people work together. The most successful teams are built on trust. They are willing to engage in difficult conversations as they challenge one another respectfully and they hold each other accountable for results. They create environments where ideas can be debated openly and where success is viewed as a shared responsibility rather than an individual achievement.

These qualities rarely appear on a résumé or in a financial report, but their impact is unmistakable.

They shape how quickly organizations adapt to change, how effectively teams solve problems, and how consistently leaders can translate strategy into action. Over time, they become a powerful driver of innovation, profitability, and sustained growth.

Another lesson reinforced during the summit was that organizational health is not something leaders achieve once and then move on from. Building a strong culture isn’t a project with a finish line; it’s an ongoing commitment.

It begins with selecting the right people, but that’s only the starting point. Great organizations are intentional about creating environments where people can thrive, contribute their unique strengths, and continuously grow. Leaders play a critical role in reinforcing those conditions every day through their actions and decisions.

For me, one of the most valuable aspects of the summit was the opportunity to reflect on my own leadership and learn from others who are navigating similar opportunities and challenges.

No matter how much experience we gain, there is always room to improve how we lead teams, develop talent, and strengthen organizational health.

I left Nashville with a renewed appreciation for the importance of culture and trust. Processes, resources, and tools will always matter, but when it comes to long-term success, I’ve become increasingly convinced that the most important investment any organization can make is in its people and the environment they create together.

Building great teams isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon, and it’s a choice leaders must continue making every day.
