Employee development is often associated with promotions, training programs or career milestones.

But some of the most meaningful growth happens in everyday moments.

It happens when a manager encourages an employee to ask questions. When someone is trusted with a new challenge. When feedback is shared with the intent to help someone improve. Those small interactions build confidence, strengthen skills and create a culture where people continue learning throughout their careers.

Gallup recognizes this in its sixth engagement element: There is someone at work who encourages my development. Employees who feel supported in their growth are more engaged, more likely to contribute ideas and more willing to take on new challenges.

At Novanta, we see the impact of those conversations every day.

One employee recently shared that having a manager who genuinely cares about his development has transformed his experience in his first full-time role. Rather than worrying about making mistakes, he feels empowered to ask questions, experiment with new approaches and continually look for better ways of working.

That mindset benefits everyone.

When employees know someone is invested in their success, they don’t just grow individually. They strengthen their teams, improve processes and help create an environment where innovation can thrive.

As we continue growing across AI-driven robotics and automation, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, digital and AI-driven manufacturing, and precision medicine, our success depends on people who never stop learning.

Development isn’t something that happens once a year.

It’s built through consistent coaching, meaningful feedback and leaders who take the time to help others reach their potential.

The question for all of us is simple:

How can we encourage someone’s development today?
