Some of the most meaningful community impact doesn’t happen in a manufacturing facility. Sometimes it happens on a Monday morning, unpacking boxes of fresh produce alongside coworkers while preparing food for local families.
Recently, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Billerica Community Pantry with a group of employees from our site in Bedford, Massachusetts. The experience left a lasting impression on me, not only because of the important work being done there, but because it reminded me of the value of investing in the communities around us.
The pantry operates much like a grocery store, offering food and household essentials in an organized, welcoming environment. During our volunteer shift, we helped unload deliveries, stock shelves, break down boxes, and package produce and dairy products into portions for families. Every task played a role in helping the pantry prepare for the people it serves.
What stood out immediately was the scale and efficiency of the operation. The team running the pantry had clear processes and organized inventory systems, built around their deep understanding of how to meet the needs of the community. It was evident that every donation and every volunteer hour helps make their work possible.
Beyond the work itself, I appreciated the opportunity to volunteer alongside employees from different roles and backgrounds. Bringing together office employees and production team members created connections that don’t always happen during day-to-day work. We spent the morning working toward a common goal, and that shared purpose made the experience even more rewarding.
As a global company, we often focus on the broader impact of what we do. Volunteering at the pantry was a reminder that local impact matters too. Supporting organizations that strengthen our communities helps create a better future for everyone who lives and works there. Food insecurity affects people from every background, and organizations like the Billerica Community Pantry play a critical role in ensuring families have access to the resources they need.
The experience was so positive that I’m already hoping we’ll return. I’d love to see us continue building relationships with organizations like the pantry through future volunteer events and donation initiatives that allow even more employees to get involved.
For anyone considering volunteering, whether through a workplace initiative or on your own, my advice is simple: Take the first step. You may only be giving a few hours of your time, but the impact reaches much further, and you might just discover, like I did, that it’s one of the best ways to start your week.
