Innovation in life science instrumentation increasingly depends on the ability to integrate specialized technologies into a cohesive, high-performance system. As customer requirements continue to evolve, many instrument developers face a common challenge: bringing together expertise across multiple engineering disciplines while maintaining aggressive development timelines.

That challenge inspired a collaborative effort between our teams and Optikos, a leader in precision optical systems with more than four decades of experience transforming complex optical concepts into production-ready solutions. With deep expertise in optical engineering, manufacturing, automation, and metrology, Optikos brought the system-level knowledge and measurement excellence needed to help turn an ambitious vision into a practical, manufacturable solution.

What began as a technology initiative became a demonstration of how customer engagement, cross-functional collaboration, and strategic partnerships can accelerate innovation and move concepts from design to deployment more efficiently.

Reimagining the Development Model

Amanda Savas Yesensky, Senior Director, Global Sales, and I recognize that modern instrument development requires a different approach than traditional supplier relationships.

As performance expectations increase, simply exchanging specifications is often no longer enough. Engineering teams need to collaborate closely, understanding requirements, tradeoffs, and system-level objectives together.

That philosophy shaped the partnership with Optikos from the start.

Rather than operating as a conventional supplier, the Optikos engineering team became an integrated part of the development effort. Engineers along with product managers and technical leaders worked together to solve challenges and evaluate tradeoffs to optimize the overall architecture.

This approach enabled stronger alignment and a more efficient integration process. Direct engineer-to-engineer collaboration helped reduce integration timelines from weeks to days.

Bringing Critical Technologies Together

The project also showcased the power of combining expertise from across our organization.

Fluorescence imaging systems require multiple critical technologies to work seamlessly together, including illumination, motion control, optics, software, and intelligent control architectures. While many companies have expertise in one or two of these areas, fewer can bring together capabilities across the entire imaging chain.

We view this as a significant opportunity to create value for customers. By connecting expertise across multiple disciplines, we can help instrument developers access capabilities that would otherwise require substantial internal investment.

The subsystem demonstrates that vision through source-to-sample integration, combining our strengths in illumination, motion control, controls, and software with Optikos’ advanced optical design and manufacturing expertise.

The result is a highly integrated platform designed around customer needs rather than individual components.

Helping Customers Focus on Innovation

For many life science companies, the greatest challenge is not proving a scientific concept. It is building the sophisticated instrumentation needed to bring that concept to market.

Organizations often spend valuable time and resources assembling expertise across multiple engineering disciplines before they can focus on scaling their innovation.

Our goal is to help simplify that journey.

By bringing together critical technologies and experienced engineering teams with trusted development partners, we can help customers reduce integration challenges, lower development risk, and accelerate timelines. This allows innovators to focus more attention on their core science and less on managing complex subsystem development.

The collaborative design process also considered manufacturability, supply chain requirements, assembly, alignment, and scalability from the earliest stages, helping create a solution built with long-term success in mind.

A Blueprint for Future Collaboration

While the fluorescence imaging subsystem is an exciting achievement, the broader significance extends well beyond a single application.

The project demonstrated how teams from different businesses can align around a shared objective. It showed how external partners can become true extensions of a development organization. Most importantly, it highlighted the value of aligning expertise around customer outcomes.

We believe that organizations willing to share knowledge and collaborate openly, focusing on collective success, will be best positioned to solve increasingly complex challenges.

The partnership with Optikos provides a strong example of that approach in action.

Looking Ahead

As technologies become increasingly interconnected, customers will continue looking for partners who can help simplify complexity and accelerate innovation.

This collaboration demonstrates what is possible when technical expertise, customer engagement, and cross-functional teamwork come together around a common goal. By combining capabilities across our organization with trusted partners like Optikos, we can help instrument developers move faster and reduce risk, focused on creating the next generation of life science breakthroughs.

Ultimately, the subsystem itself is only part of the story. The greater achievement is the collaborative model behind it, one that brings together people and expertise to solve customer challenges more effectively.
