Culture isn’t built solely through meetings, projects, or organizational goals. It’s built through the relationships employees create with one another.
At our Syracuse, New York, site, those relationships were on full display during the annual Chili Cook-Off, a longstanding tradition organized by the Events Committee.
This year’s event brought together employees from across the organization, including engineering, manufacturing, shipping, marketing, and other functions. With eight chili entries competing for top honors, the event created opportunities for employees to connect beyond their everyday responsibilities and interact with colleagues they may not regularly work alongside.

The timing made the competition even more special. Members of the Global Sales Team were visiting Syracuse that week and joined employees in tasting, voting, and celebrating the event, giving participants an opportunity to connect with colleagues from outside the site as well.
While the competition generated plenty of friendly debate over the best recipe, the true success of the event was measured by the conversations it sparked.
Employee-led gatherings create space for people to build trust, strengthen relationships, and gain a deeper appreciation for the diverse backgrounds and talents that exist throughout an organization. Those connections often carry back into the workplace, supporting stronger collaboration and teamwork.
This year’s champion, Tom Davis, demonstrated that innovation and creativity are not limited to the workplace. His award-winning Creamy White Chili earned the top spot and quickly became one of the most talked-about highlights of the event.
Events like the Chili Cook-Off showcase the power of employee engagement. They remind us that meaningful connections often begin with simple opportunities to come together, share experiences, and celebrate one another.
Strong cultures are built one relationship at a time, and sometimes those relationships start with a bowl of chili.
