Sometimes the most meaningful moments at work happen away from conference rooms, production floors, and project plans.
That was certainly true on August 21, when our team in Mukilteo, Washington, gathered for an employee appreciation luncheon. What started as a shared meal became an opportunity to celebrate one another and spend time together outside of our day-to-day responsibilities.
The menu featured pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, mac and cheese, and coleslaw. My colleague Justin Ryser, Sr. Scientist Laser, and I spent many hours preparing and smoking the meat in advance. Seeing employees enjoy the food and the time together made every hour worthwhile.
The event was about much more than lunch. As organizations navigate change, it is easy to focus exclusively on deadlines, priorities, and business results. Taking time to connect reminds us that behind every achievement are people working together toward a common goal.
One of the most important responsibilities of leadership is creating an environment where people feel valued and connected. While business results matter, strong relationships are what enable teams to collaborate effectively and support one another through change.
That mindset is evident throughout the Mukilteo team. Employees regularly step up to help each other and contribute beyond their individual roles. The luncheon provided an opportunity to recognize those contributions while strengthening the connections that make our site successful.
Strong teams are built through trust and shared experiences. When people feel connected to one another, collaboration becomes easier and challenges become more manageable. Even simple moments, such as sharing a meal and conversation, can help reinforce a sense of belonging and remind employees that they are part of something larger than their individual roles.
The employee appreciation luncheon was a simple event, but it reflected something bigger than a shared meal. It highlighted the culture of teamwork that employees build every day. As I looked around the room and saw colleagues enjoying each other’s company, I was reminded that some of the strongest foundations for success are built through moments like these.
