When people talk about successful leaders, they often focus on business results or growth milestones. Those achievements matter, but the most enduring leaders leave behind something greater.
As Vice President, Marketing Clemens Scholz retires after 26 years in medical technology, I have been reflecting on what made his career so impactful.
His accomplishments were significant. He helped grow a leading Advanced Surgery business and championed lean operating principles, advancing technologies that strengthened our market position and supporting strategic growth initiatives across the organization. His influence extended beyond operational and product innovation into long-term business strategy, where he helped identify and evaluate opportunities that continue to shape our future direction.
What distinguished Clemens, however, was not only what he accomplished, but how he accomplished it.
Clemens studied mechanical engineering and medicine and wrote his Ph.D. thesis in Biomedical Engineering. He brought a rare ability to connect technical, clinical and business perspectives. He could quickly understand complex challenges and identify meaningful opportunities, helping teams find practical solutions. That combination of knowledge and curiosity made him particularly effective in identifying emerging opportunities and seeing potential where others might not yet see it.
Equally important was his commitment to integrity. Throughout his career, Clemens consistently chose the path that aligned with his principles, even when it was not the easiest option. That authenticity earned the trust and respect of employees throughout the organization.
Employees always knew where they stood with Clemens. He was honest and approachable, creating an environment where people felt empowered to contribute and innovate. As the organization grew, he remained deeply connected to everyone and genuinely interested in their success.
Innovation was equally central to his leadership style. Clemens encouraged employees to challenge assumptions and explore new ideas, always thinking beyond conventional solutions. His curiosity and willingness to invest in people helped create a culture where innovation could thrive.
What stands out most is the balance he maintained between driving results and supporting people. While leading substantial business growth and technological advancement, he never lost sight of the individuals behind those achievements. Employees remember a leader who knew them personally and encouraged them, consistently bringing positive energy to the workplace.
Clemens’ influence also extended beyond business performance. Through volunteer efforts and charitable initiatives, he demonstrated that leadership is ultimately about serving others and making a meaningful difference.
As our industry continues to evolve, the lessons from Clemens’ career remain as relevant as ever: Prepare thoroughly. Stay curious. Support innovation. Respect diverse perspectives. Lead with integrity. Never lose sight of people.
These principles shaped Clemens Scholz’s extraordinary 26-year career and will continue to influence the teams and leaders that follow.
That is what makes a legacy last.
