When we hosted Wear Your Football Shirt to Work Day at our Taunton site, I expected to see plenty of team colors and friendly conversations. What I didn’t fully anticipate was how such a simple event would highlight the power of connection in the workplace.

Employees arrived wearing shirts representing international teams or local clubs and even other sports. Every shirt had a story behind it. Some reflected national pride, others represented childhood memories, family traditions or even long-standing loyalties. Throughout the day, those stories became conversation starters that helped employees connect in new ways.

While football provided the theme, the event was really about people.

As I spoke with employees, I saw how quickly common interests can bring people together. Teams that may not interact every day found opportunities to connect and learn more about one another. It reminded me that building strong workplace relationships doesn’t always require large initiatives. Sometimes it starts with creating space for employees to share a small part of who they are.

The day also highlighted something we value deeply: diversity. Our employees come from different backgrounds and experiences. Those differences make our teams stronger. Seeing that diversity represented so visibly across the site was a powerful reminder that inclusion is not just about welcoming different perspectives. It’s about creating opportunities for those perspectives to be seen and celebrated.

Events like Wear Your Football Shirt to Work Day also reinforce the importance of teamwork. Success in football depends on players working together toward a common goal, and the same is true in the workplace. Collaboration and trust help teams perform at their best, whether on the pitch or in a business environment.

For me, the day was a reminder that culture is built through everyday moments. When employees feel comfortable sharing their backgrounds and experiences, stronger connections follow. Those connections help create an environment where people feel valued and motivated to succeed together.
